Austin Summer Survival Guide for Parents
Let's just acknowledge the obvious.
Summer in Texas is hot.
Not "bring a water bottle" hot.
More like "the steering wheel is a weapon" hot.
As a mom, I've learned that surviving summer isn't about creating a Pinterest-perfect schedule. It's about finding enough activities to keep everyone entertained without spending a fortune or losing your sanity.
Here's what's worked for us.
Start Early
If you're planning anything outdoors, do it before lunch.
Parks.
Walks.
Playgrounds.
Farmers markets.
By the afternoon, you'll be questioning all your life choices.
Keep a Summer Emergency Kit in Your Car
Every Texas parent needs one.
Mine usually includes:
Water bottles
Sunscreen
Snacks
Towels
Extra phone charger
Hair ties
Wet wipes
You'll use every single one at some point.
Embrace Splash Pads
Splash pads are one of the best parenting hacks in Central Texas.
They're inexpensive, easy, and allow kids to burn off energy without requiring a full day at a water park.
Find Indoor Options
Not every day needs to happen outside.
Libraries, movie theaters, museums, bowling alleys, coffee shops, and bookstores can become lifesavers when temperatures climb into triple digits.
Don't Overschedule
I've learned that kids don't necessarily need constant entertainment.
Sometimes they need downtime.
Sometimes parents need downtime.
And honestly, that's okay.
Make Simple Things Feel Special
Some of our favorite summer memories weren't expensive.
Ice cream after dinner.
A spontaneous trip to the park.
A day trip to Georgetown.
A family movie night.
The little things tend to stick.
My Take
No parent is creating magical memories every single day.
Most of us are simply doing our best to survive summer while making a few good memories along the way.
Fortunately, Central Texas offers plenty of opportunities to do exactly that.
