Family-Friendly Weekend Adventures Near Austin

One of the things I love most about living in Central Texas is that you don't have to travel far to feel like you've gone somewhere.

Within an hour or two of Austin, you'll find charming small towns, outdoor adventures, family attractions, and plenty of opportunities to make memories with your kids.

Here are a few weekend adventures I'd recommend.

Georgetown

Georgetown is one of my favorite day-trip destinations.

Spend time walking around the historic square, grab lunch at a local restaurant, visit nearby parks, and enjoy a slower pace than Austin.

It's family-friendly without feeling overly touristy.

Gruene

Gruene offers a little bit of everything.

Shopping.

Live music.

History.

Good food.

And plenty of opportunities to wander around with the family.

It's one of those places that feels uniquely Texas.

Waco

Thanks to Magnolia and other attractions, Waco has become a popular weekend destination.

Families can spend time exploring museums, parks, restaurants, and local attractions while experiencing a city that's very different from Austin.

Marble Falls

If you're looking for scenic Hill Country views, Marble Falls is worth the drive.

The area offers outdoor recreation, local shops, restaurants, and beautiful scenery.

San Antonio

Sometimes people forget just how close San Antonio really is.

The River Walk, museums, historic sites, and family attractions make it an easy weekend getaway.

Lake Travis

You don't have to leave the Austin area to feel like you're on vacation.

A day spent around Lake Travis can include swimming, boating, lakeside dining, or simply enjoying the views.

Johnson City

If your family enjoys outdoor activities and Hill Country scenery, Johnson City makes a great day trip.

The drive alone is worth it.

My Take

Some of my favorite family memories haven't happened on expensive vacations.

They happened during simple weekend adventures close to home.

Central Texas makes it easy to explore somewhere new without spending hours in the car.
