Fun Things to Do With Kids This Summer in Austin

Summer in Texas can be hot.

Really hot.

Which means parents are constantly looking for ways to keep kids entertained without spending every day inside staring at screens.

As a mom, I know the struggle. Whether you're trying to fill an entire summer break or just survive a weekend, here are some of my favorite family-friendly activities around Austin.

Visit the Thinkery

If your kids enjoy hands-on activities, the Thinkery is one of the best places in Austin.

The exhibits encourage creativity, problem-solving, and exploration while still feeling like pure fun.

It's one of those places where kids learn without realizing they're learning.

Spend a Day at Typhoon Texas

Sometimes you just need water.

Typhoon Texas in Pflugerville offers water slides, a lazy river, splash areas, and plenty of opportunities to cool off during the hottest months of the year.

Explore Austin Nature & Science Center

This is one of my favorite recommendations because it combines outdoor exploration with education.

Kids can learn about wildlife, enjoy interactive exhibits, and spend time outside without feeling like they're sitting in a classroom.

Walk the Georgetown Square

Not every activity needs to be elaborate.

Grab ice cream, browse local shops, and enjoy a slower pace while exploring one of the most charming downtown areas in Central Texas.

Visit Sweet Eats Adventure Farm

Located in Georgetown, Sweet Eats offers seasonal activities, animals, outdoor play areas, and enough space for kids to burn off energy.

It's especially popular with younger children.

Take a Family Day Trip to Gruene

One of my favorite Texas towns.

Parents can enjoy shopping and live music while kids explore the area and enjoy being somewhere that feels different from everyday life.

Visit Local Splash Pads

Austin and the surrounding communities have some fantastic splash pads that offer a free or low-cost way to cool off.

Sometimes the simplest activities end up being the biggest hits.

My Take

The best summer memories usually aren't the most expensive ones.

They're the spontaneous ice cream stops, splash pad visits, and afternoons spent exploring somewhere new.

The good news is Central Texas gives families plenty of opportunities to do exactly that.
