Places to Watch the Sunset Near Austin
Maybe it's because I'm a native Texan, but I never get tired of a good sunset.
There's something about slowing down for a few minutes, putting the phone away, and watching the sky change colors that reminds you why you love living here.
Whether you're planning a date night, showing off Austin to out-of-town guests, or simply need a moment to breathe after a long week, these are some of my favorite places to catch a sunset around Central Texas.
The Oasis
Let's start with the obvious one.
The Oasis is famous for its Lake Travis sunsets, and for good reason. Even longtime locals still make the trip because the views are hard to beat.
Mount Bonnell
If you're willing to climb a few stairs, you'll be rewarded with one of the most iconic views in Austin.
It's a great option for anyone looking for a sunset spot that feels a little more adventurous.
Pennybacker Bridge Overlook
This overlook has become one of Austin's most photographed locations.
The combination of the bridge, the river, and the surrounding hills makes for an incredible sunset backdrop.
Lake Georgetown
One of my personal favorites.
The lake feels a little quieter than some Austin destinations, and the sunsets can be absolutely beautiful.
Brushy Creek Trails
You don't always need a famous overlook to enjoy a sunset.
Sometimes a simple walk along the trail as the sun goes down is exactly what you need.
Balcones Canyonlands
If you're looking to escape the city, this area offers some incredible Hill Country views and wide-open skies.
My Take
The best sunset spot isn't necessarily the most famous one.
Sometimes it's simply wherever you happen to be when you decide to slow down and appreciate it.
That said, Central Texas gives us plenty of beautiful places to choose from.
