Moving to Austin? Start Here

If you're thinking about moving to Austin, welcome.

You're not alone.

Every year, people relocate to Central Texas for new jobs, family, lifestyle changes, and opportunities they can't find elsewhere. And while Austin gets a lot of attention online, there are a few things that don't always make it into the relocation guides.

As someone who has helped people move to the area and who calls Central Texas home, here's where I'd start.

Don't Focus on Austin Alone

This is probably the biggest mistake I see.

Many people begin their home search by looking only at Austin. What they quickly discover is that some of the best communities are actually outside the city limits.

Depending on your lifestyle, places like Cedar Park, Round Rock, Georgetown, Leander, Liberty Hill, and Pflugerville may offer a better fit than Austin itself.

Think About Your Commute

Austin traffic isn't the worst in the country, but it can absolutely impact your quality of life.

Before choosing a neighborhood, think about:

  • Where you'll work

  • How often you'll commute

  • Whether you'll work remotely

  • How much time you're willing to spend in the car

The neighborhood that looks perfect online may feel very different during rush hour.

Understand That Texas Is Big

People relocating from other states often underestimate distances.

Just because two places look close on a map doesn't mean they're a quick drive apart.

When researching neighborhoods, pay attention to actual drive times, not just mileage.

Consider Lifestyle Before Square Footage

Everyone wants the perfect house.

But I encourage buyers to think about the life they'll be living outside the house too.

Do you want:

  • Walkability?

  • Good restaurants nearby?

  • Hiking trails?

  • Community events?

  • New construction?

  • A larger yard?

  • Easy access to major employers?

Those answers usually help narrow down the search much faster.

Explore Before You Decide

If possible, spend time in the communities you're considering.

Grab coffee.

Visit local parks.

Drive around on a weekday.

Have dinner at a local restaurant.

You'll learn more in a few hours than you will from weeks of scrolling online.

Don't Expect Everything to Be Like Home

And that's okay.

One of the best parts of relocating is discovering new traditions, communities, restaurants, and experiences.

Come with an open mind.

You may end up loving a neighborhood you never originally considered.

My Take

Austin isn't just a city anymore.

It's a collection of communities, each with its own personality.

The goal isn't to find the most popular neighborhood. It's to find the one that fits your lifestyle, priorities, and future plans.
