Where to Take Out-of-Town Guests in Austin
If you live in Austin long enough, it happens.
A friend texts and says they're coming to town.
Your cousin wants recommendations.
Your parents are visiting.
Someone from work is flying in for a conference.
And suddenly you're trying to figure out how to show off Austin without spending the entire weekend sitting in traffic or waiting in line for three hours.
As a native Texan who's called Austin home for several years, these are the places I find myself taking visitors again and again. They offer a little bit of what makes Austin special, whether your guests are here for a day or a long weekend.
Start with Lady Bird Lake
If someone has never been to Austin before, Lady Bird Lake is usually my first stop.
The trails offer some of the best views of the skyline, and it's an easy way to experience the city's outdoor culture. Whether you're walking, renting kayaks, or simply enjoying the scenery, it's one of those places that feels uniquely Austin.
Bonus points if you go around sunrise or sunset.
Grab Brunch
Austin takes brunch seriously.
There are countless options, but I always recommend choosing somewhere local rather than a chain. Brunch is one of the easiest ways to introduce visitors to Austin's food scene without committing to a full day of restaurant hopping.
It's also a great opportunity to slow down and catch up before diving into the rest of your plans.
Explore South Congress
Even if you've lived here for years, South Congress never gets old.
Between the local shops, murals, coffee spots, boutiques, and people-watching, there's always something to see.
It's one of the easiest areas to recommend because everyone seems to find something they enjoy, whether they're into shopping, photography, food, or simply wandering around.
Catch a Sunset at Mount Bonnell
If your guests want great views without a long hike, Mount Bonnell is hard to beat.
The climb is relatively short, and the reward is one of the most iconic views in Austin.
This is especially great for visitors who are only in town for a short time and want to check a few Austin landmarks off their list.
Experience Live Music
Austin didn't earn the title "Live Music Capital of the World" by accident.
You don't need a major concert to enjoy the local music scene. Some of the best experiences happen in smaller venues where you can discover talented artists you've never heard before.
If your guests are visiting on a weekend, I highly recommend finding a local show.
Visit a Local Brewery
Austin's brewery scene continues to grow, and many breweries offer more than just drinks.
You'll often find food trucks, outdoor seating, live music, games, and family-friendly spaces.
Even guests who aren't big beer drinkers usually enjoy the atmosphere.
Take a Drive Through the Hill Country
Sometimes the best Austin experiences happen just outside the city.
A scenic drive through the Texas Hill Country offers beautiful views, wineries, small-town charm, and a slower pace that many visitors don't expect.
This is one of my favorite recommendations for guests who have already seen the major attractions.
Don't Try to Do Everything
This might be my biggest piece of advice.
Austin isn't a city that needs an itinerary packed from morning until night.
Some of the best memories happen when you're sitting on a patio, listening to live music, sharing queso, and enjoying good conversation.
Your guests probably aren't looking for a perfect tour guide. They're looking to experience Austin the way locals do.
And that's usually where the magic happens.
